Sepia Saturday # 153 - 24 Nov 2012

WELCOME TO

SEPIA SATURDAY

Alan has sent us on a most mysterious mission involving two sweet faced little girls.  Little Miss Lala Williams and Miss Elgie Crook, (who certainly wasn't by any means a crook) seated side by side and if we so desire we could further investigate on google.

From my quick trip on google, I believe they were descendants of John Williams.
Lala Williams born October 25, 1873 died April 10, 1965
Elgie Ida Crook born September 30, 1874 died July 10, 1962
So far that's the only connection I found.
Doesn't it make you wonder what those two little girls did to live such long lives?

This week, Alan suggests that we look into the photo to discover our own theme.

Looking into his pictured girls I see

Friendship

"Shh!"
Unidentified girls and their dolls photo take 1909- 1923.
"To have a good friend is one of the highest delights of life; to be a good friend is one of the noblest and most difficult undertakings."
There is no hope or joy except in human relations.
-Antoine de Saint-Exupery

These little girls are unidentified- the photo is dated 1850-1860
but there's something very interesting in this photo.
Notice the fingers and a thumb on the right hand side.
I wonder what the story is there?
Who was it?

Patricia Freeman and Frances Gross- testing the new railing at the White House which leads to the executive offices.

Friends are the sunshine of life.

Enjoying a good time with your friends is medicine for your soul!

Stephanie Cewe and Ann Maneveit, Santa's helpers? They're busy crafting toy trains in New Haven, Connecticut.

Quite often it's the jobs we share that make the best of friends, often for life, even long after the work is finished!

Two unknown girls, in Falls River, Massachusetts.

There's nothing worth the wear of winning but laughter, and the love of friends.
Hilaire Belloc

My what lovely braids you have!

Please don't let this be the end.  Why not go right now and give an old friend a call?  Or while you're out and about this weekend pick up a new one.

Only remember, to be a good friend and have a good friend
it takes a lot of mending and sewing and keeping it together.

Thank you friend for stopping by!

That's a weird daguerreotype. I guess it is the hand of their black nanny.

What a fine collection of photos, some with so much detail like the trains and the flowerpots; fun too on the railings - you can almost hear then shriek.

For a minute I had the idea that the third picture shows two dolls. And also after enlarging it I am not convinced they are not.

Very interesting post, love to see the old photographs, highlighted with quotes.
Yes, friends are the spice of life.

I do like that first picture where the girls have put their dolls to sleep! And the girls on the railing. As for the little girls with the hand to the side - I don't think little girls were meant to wear that off-the-shoulder style and try to sit up so straight.

Such a fun post about friends. While reading your post, I thought of another set of very good friends - Lucy and Ethel from I Love Lucy. I think it was the photo of the two women working on the toy trains that reminded me of those two funny friends.

You always find such interesting pictures Karen and that first one is so sharp and clear that it looks as if it was taken yesterday! What an unusual pose too. Some thought-provoking words of wisdom interlaced between the pictures. I've always like the Belloc one.

Karen, you chose such wonderful pictures for us today! I love the one with the "finger code". Maybe it was what they told them to do to hold still?

So happy to have you as my new friend.

Lovely collection of girlies of all ages. :)

You are the master of matching photo and lofty quote. I always leave your blog with so much to think about. The piece about how friendships are formed at work really struck home with me.

Another excellent post Karen, I love your theme of friendship... reminds me that I'd best get in touch with a few of my friends this upcoming week. My near and dear friends understand what a busy life is like, we seem to pick right up where we left off when time permits, there's no demands, just knowing we're here for one another keeps out bonds alive; the mending and sewing as you so eloquently put it. :-)

Have a wonderful week!

I just love the cheekiness of that top photo! Very nice post, Karen.

A nice medley on girls and friendship. The two little girls in the theme photo would know all about it.

What a beautiful bunch of photos. The two little girls with off the shoulder dresses is so unusual. I can picture that women would wear that style, but not little girls.

Friendship! What a perfect expansion on the theme. Love seeing all those girlfriends enjoying good times together.

Not only do I love your pictures, I love that word.

Although it does sound a bit like a wound.

Okay.

Maybe not!

Cool pics!

A great set and I warrant that hand you see was to keep those girls still long enough for a proper picture.
