From Inside a New Ulm Cafe - GF

Greetings all, with photos from our weekend visit to New Ulm, Minnesota.

After a quick glance outside our window what did my wandering eyes see?

I spied a man, standing next to a fence.

I asked the waitress who he was, and she apologized for not knowing!

Thankfully, a sign describes this past New Ulm citizen.

Of course, fences were on my mind and luckily I discovered this hidden gem of a park just a few blocks from downtown.

It was perfect but the weather, not so much.

Winter plays a horribly bleak, and forlorn dried up trick on delightful little parks such as this.

All week we had grey skies and Saturday wasn't any different.

Yet you could imagine what a prize it can be during every other season, sunshine or not, and it even had a gnome family!

This park is nestled between two buildings and the walkway on the left leads to an Arts and Crafts gift shop and a Quilter's Shop!

They had all kinds of fascinating old things decorating the place.

"It is good to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought."James Douglas

"Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine." -  Anthony J. D'Angelo

"Even in winter an isolated patch of snow has a special quality. " -  Andy Goldsworthy

Interesting New Ulm Fact.  From the Minnesota Guide (a handbook for Travelers and Pleasure Seekers) written in 1869 - It was laid out in 1857 by a German colony from Cincinnati.  In the Sioux war of 1862 it was almost burned down, and many of the inhabitants butchered.  Two fierce battles were fought with the Indians, who besieged the place August 19 and 23, but were repulsed.  Since then the town was rebuilt.

Tex, too funny, that's what I thought at first too, but they posted a story about him, a famous blacksmith from the area. He certainly stood out to me in a peculiar way too!

The winter is such a different world, isn't it? So stark and chill, bare and cold. I'd love to see this in the summer, too!

And thanks so much for stopping by the Marmleade Gypsy -- love it when you come and your nice comments!

Very nice fences. Yes winter can be bleak and dreary but I think it has a quiet beauty as well. I enjoyed your fences very much.

It's good advice to bring your own sunshine when the weather is bleak.
I don't know New Ulm, Minnesota, but I do know the "old" original Ulm in Germany - it was just an hour to drive there from my place. A beautiful old town with a wonderful minster which I think has the tallest spire.

The only Ulm city I have ever heard of is located in Germany.

A great collection of really interesting shots. I'd never heard of New Ulm - when I Googled it, the Number 1 on the Top Ten things to do was: Dance with a Gnome!!

Nice collection of fences. I like the one in the first photo the best though, even with the creepy looking fellow standing there staring at you while you eat!
