Alphabe-Thursday - Anything Autumn

THIS IS A MOST UNUSUAL ALPHABE-THURSDAY POST - again this week in honor of autumn.

Jenny is calling it, "Anything Autumn!"  So if you want to join along or just want to view a bit more of autumn's magic please go here

http://jennymatlock.blogspot.com/2011/10/alphabe-thursdays-fall-break-and_26.html

Just so you know as a special treat for all who enter, Jenny is offering another give away!
...and it's a very special box filled with Autumn!

Have a MoNstRouSlY HaPpY HaLLoWeeN!

Why has Halloween fallen through a crack in the darkness of most people’s minds? These days, a shadow lurking in a corner is simply that; merely a shadow and nothing more.

Gone are bobbing for apples at grannies house.
or, little boys and girls dressing like cats or a mouse.
No more laughing and scurrying from house to house.
They wouldn’t dream of being a giant pumpkin man
Or pair up two boys dressed like a van.

I dressed like a cat for several years.  But sadly this is the only picture of me dressed for Trick or Treating.....hard to believe!

No more goblins dancing about, haven’t you heard?
Today if they dress up at all they’re Darth Vader or an Angry Bird.
No more telling scary ghost stories over bonfires
Or feasting on caramel apples and nuts, or other tasty harvest fruits-
Oh no! Haven’t you heard!

It’s “lights out” all across most neighborhoods on Halloween night!
Nobody opening doors to offer yummy delights,
Gone are the little goblins that went bump in the night
or dressed in ways, to almost frighten anyone, all through the night.
The pure magic of ghouls and black cats is out of sight.

I still enjoy seeing all the decorations and the warm lights hovering about each house !

Once we could be mad as hatters for one night-
Or wear our hair in a frazzle and cause others to beware
Of us all, as we played tricks with all our might
Oh how we loved playing truth or dare
Especially on Halloween night…

So, will you be out this Halloween Night?
Still partaking in that old childhood delight?
Perhaps you’ll bake a tasty soul cake just for the night.
And hold scared the tribute of the light
Knowing it brings abundant harvest to all
And pumpkin lanterns will lighten the darkness for all,
guiding us past cornstalks and ghouls on Halloween night.
Well for those of us who still dare to go out Halloween night!

May your autumn be merry and bright and all your days filled with delight!

What do you think is the most reasonable of all Halloween explanations?

"What kind of face does your pumpkin have?"

Halloween was always my favorite Holiday!
It is sad that things have changed...but you seem to keep it alive! Don't stop!

We still have trick or treating around here... and I'm in Manila! I've posted a photo of part of our neighbors decorations. Don't join the festivities myself, though. Nice Halloween post!

have a happy & magical autumn...and a safe & spooky halloween night!! (my favorite time of year & holiday!!)

it's sad how 'halloween' has changed...i mean, people can't be trusted anymore...no more going door to door...costumes aren't home-made, but buy them at the store...collecting for UNICEF...better not carve a pumpkin 'cause you might cut yourself...or someone else...and don't you know, candy makes you fat. oh well...the times have changed!
my pumpkin still sits with a blank face...no face...still trying to decide what to carve this year!

What a fun post! I have great memories of Halloween and am sorry that it has changed so much in recent years.

Happily, my grandkids live in an area where the kids still trick or treat to their hearts' content. I wish more children had that opportunity.

=)

I don't know of any pictures of me dressed up for halloween (I think there may be some Super-8 movie footage) but film was expensive back then! Neat shots and memories and since i live off the beaten down Halloween trail, I don't know what I'll do

Oh poor sad Sage, I so know what you mean....I too live where the little ghosts and goblins don't drive with mommy and daddy up our long dark driveway...that's partly why my daugher and I will be in Disney Land, on Halloween with her little 2 year old ...can you guess what Lyra will be? A Princess of course! ...and we already know the experiences of the American Girl, have you been there lately? Have a boo-filled Halloween anyway you can! ;)

I think it's too scarey for small kids to be out on the street after dark, especially in the city. Things may still be safe in rural communities, but then you have to worry about the population of people gone bad. I mean, folks are meaner than they use to be. We never took ours to anyone's house we didn't know well. Now, I simply keep the porch light off to discourage trick or treater altogether. But, oh what a fun post you put together! Thanks for stopping by today!

I remember those costumes like in the picture of you when you were young. I, too, miss some of the Halloween magic from back then, but some of it now is amazing, too. I love trunk-or-treats! Decorated cars... parents participating... And I LOVE the selections of lights we can get now!

New follower from Alphabe-Thursday.
As for our pumpkin's face--we can't carvethem until the 30th or the AZ heat turns them into a puddle. But my guess is something Star Wars--that's all my little boys can think of nowadays.

Halloween is moving into Belgium slowly slowly each year a little more. But when my son was little it didn't exist at all.

I enjoyed your post. I fear Halloween has been hijacked by big business interests. I still enjoy kids dressed in simple homemade costumes...but I guess that's just me.

I've never been a Halloween person, but I do enjoy other people's creative fun with it. Hope you have a good one!

How sad! Halloween is a time to play and have fun by dressing up and pretending to be something other than what you are. It's a time to show your creation to others. It's a time to indulge in candy!
simple fun!

it's fun to see what people on the street have done to their house! Like the pumpkin!

Love the kitty costume. So different than most today! Times have changed from Halloweens that have passed but thankfully we have a few special stops to let our children indulge in the holiday. There are so many ways to enjoy Halloween but it wouldn't be the same without Trick or Treating a few places. :) Loved your post!

You clever woman!! Come to my house on Halloween! I give out Mardi Gras beads to all the little kiddies! They love them. This year, Keil, our son, came home one day with several bags of candy to hand out. I hadn't the heart to tell him that was never our plan, so I guess the little beggars will get a double treat at our house this year!!

Halloween has recently become a Big Gig in England...It now even eclipses our own homegrown Plot Night.

EG Wow and Storybeader- exactly I used to make my children's costumes when they were younger, but then they got into making their own...or going with what was hot for the season! The one in this photo we made! (of my daughter) as you see the one I wore came out of a box. But still today I love seeing what people do to decorate...except the real awful dreading displays....have a boo-tiful Halloween!

Judie- I'd be there in a second if I lived closer! I will be actually closer to you on Halloween, since my daughter and her little princess will be in sunny and I hear 80 degree California! Yes, Disney Land is planned for Halloween! Have fun with your necklaces they sound terrific!

21 Wits said...

Tony- Your Plot Night sounds exciting, I'll have to google it! Perhaps England is catching up with things like Halloween from all of us who travel there from time to time, and we shed such fun and exciting things around!

21 Wits said...

Tony- Oh yes, thanks for leaving the link to Plot Night, and I think I will enjoy our kind of Boo-tiful Happy Halloween adventures instead!

Halloween is alive and well in my neighborhood. People decorate more for Halloween than for Christmas!

As Tony said, Halloween has only recently become a big thing in this country. Mind you, up his end of the valley they have ghosts and spooky going-ons the whole year around. Things are much more rational down at the bottom of the valley.

But I'm also very, very worried about you!

You won the giveaway but you haven't answered the e-mails...and you're not posting...and...

please, please...

Let me know you're okay.

Love your poem and pictures here!
