Sepia Saturday 102 : Saturday 26 November 2011

THIS IS A SEPIA SATURDAY POST

Greetings to all.....my post is in honor of Thanksgiving Day celebrated in America and always on the fourth Thursday of November.  I have a "somewhat" Thanksgiving theme for you all.  Even Canada celebrates a similar national holiday on the second Monday in October.

I open with what many people will be celebrating this Thanksgiving and have many times before as well...

Football, and The Northfield High School football team, 1894, and as the photo shows, apparently they were champions that year! - photo courtesy of Minnesota Historical Society. They do appear to be older than high school age to me....

...We also must remember those troops of service people all over the world who will not be gathering around their family's table this year....

Dinner for the 36th Infantry at Fort Snelling....in Minnesota.
Strangely enough, like all holidays there seems to be several stories or celebrations for one holiday.  In short, this day in the United States is a national holiday in acknowledgment of divine favor, celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November.
Or, another definition is, from 1863, what Americans have termed the First Thanksgiving which celebrates giving thanks to God, for safely guiding them to the new world. The First Thanksgiving lasted for 3 days and provided food for 13 Pilgrims and 90 native Americans.

Another version says in 1621 when the Pilgrims settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts, the U.S. tradition was celebrated with a meal held at Wampanoag.  In any event Thanksgiving Day in modern times is still celebrated with dinner, usually always turkey and pumpkin pie as just two of it's forever dishes!

Another much anticipated event in November is hunting and trapping season, especially for deer.

An unknown couple posing with a dear head in Morrison County, about 1900.  I'm real curious about the papers he's holding for this picture.

Yes, hunting is a tradition for many families, as is my favorite (since childhood) tradition is:  watching the Thanksgiving Day Macy's Parade.  Although for all the years I grew up, stores didn't open for business on Thanksgiving Day.  Oh heavens no.  But apparently there are some companies that just need more, and they are going to open on Thanksgiving Day.....to get a jump start on what our next celebration is....Black Friday.....where stores compete for your sales.....

I will leave you with this thought...... at my house we do gather together as family and friends and we are all very thankful in so many ways and yes, we share in a really delicious meal.  We also give thanks to those not able to be with us, like my son-in-law who is deployed with his unit.  We do support his and every other service person everywhere.

This is about 1900....and courtesy of Minnesota Historical Society...  and Thanksgiving Day is a jewel, to set in the hearts of honest men; but be careful that you do not take the day, and leave out the gratitude, - E. P. Powell.

He who thanks but with the lips
                                                          Thanks but in part;
                                                          The full, the true Thanksgiving
                                                          Comes from the heart.

Amen to that! Not just true of Thanksgiving. I endorse your reminder to remember those not able to be with their families on this day, for whatever reason. We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving of course, but I always look forward to hearing about other people’s celebrations. A lovely ecelectc mix of photos for us again Karen, and I always learn something new.

You found some interesting images. I was amused by the spelling of "a dear head."

I better go see if I can find a daytime TV listing for today.

An excellent post, with excellent sentiments. Godspeed to your son-in-law that he returns safely. I have an editorial in my paper today about the creep of Black Friday into Thanksgiving. I'll post a link on my blog.

Very compelling photos, but I have to say the football team ruffians have stolen my heart! Happy Thanksgiving to you.

Seems my fingers have forgotten how to spell ‘eclectic’.

A great post again Karen. If you've recovered from Thanksgiving don't spend too much on Black Friday.
Your picture with the 'dear' head is superb - neither the 'dear' nor the woman are looking at the camera.

Karen: Interesting post. I actually have a post coming out on Sunday or Monday on a similar topic.

Looks like the man with the dear head is missing a leg. or is he sitting on it?

A great post for the theme and very interesting. I agree with your recognition of the armed forces who are away from their homes and families at this family time. Hunting is big around my neck of the woods too.

I agree with you, the football players either failed a bunch of grades or they came back to redo years just to play football! lol

Your photos are amazing, does the library or historical place let you photo them or are these actual copies?

Happy Thanksgiving Karen! Your comments about the shopping season reminded me of the year we went without black olives. My sister and I raided the pantry before the big day. No GROCERY stores were open on the big day. Times have definitely changed.

I Love The First Photo Especially. We Tend To Think of Old Photos being overformal, whereas we expect Modern ones more informal/'natural'.However Your Football Team's Body Language here is very relaxed .Modern Team Pictures seem positively regimentary !
[is "regimentary" a real word??!!!]

You did cover the array of Thanksgiving traditions...My favorite photo was the last, hands held out going uphill, I think. A good array. Locally, the Caledonia High School Boys defeated Moose Lake to win the AA school football championship yesterday, played in the metrodome. They were jubilant, so I thought the first photo of the boys, possibly not after a win. A belated Thanksgiving wish for peace and happiness to you.

What a wonderful post; great photos and I enjoyed the information about Thanksgiving as it isn't celebrated here in NZ, but should be as so many of us have so much to give thanks for.

What a beautiful post and a thoughtful perspective on Thanksgiving. It is without doubt my favorite holiday, as it gives us all time to spend with family, to be thankful for what we have, and to think of others who are less fortunate.

Starting with football got my full attention. Unfortunately, my hometeam didn't make the finals for the Grey Cup which was won by the BC lions last weekend.

Hunting nowadays are hunting for great deals, in store or on the web. Times have changed but we are still hunters...

Glad you got to enjoy your Thanksgiving. May all be well.

Great photo selections. I was amazed at the couple sitting with their deer head. Must have been a great hunt or the guy was proud of his years catch.
