Sepia Saturday 127 : 26 May 2012

SEPIA SATURDAY

BEWARE

OF WHICH AROMA WAKES YOU UP TODAY

Shall it be a fresh cup of coffee, or the scent of your friendly neighborhood cow?

Coffee Pot Restaurant in Pennville, Indiana.

Hopefully, if you're like me, you'll select freshly brewed coffee over cows.
Although, this Coffee Pot Restaurant
doesn't appear to be open yet.

Alan, from Sepia Saturday has served up the lovely town of Waterford and/or coffee, tea or COWS!   Imagine that!

But, if I may moo along with this cow theme for just a moment

I want to share a cow-house which stands like an oasis in the desert.  Sorry no cows are present in such glamorous surroundings, but another kind of distinct aroma lingers, and fortunately it's not my turn to clean the stalls.
This view of a Cow House looking northwest along the rear courtyard wall is at the Robinson-Aiken House at 48 Elizabeth Street, Charleston, South Carolina.

Okay enough cow talk, lets drink up instead.

Shall we find a waiter and order a fresh cup of coffee?

Meet Linus Noel offering beignets and Chicory coffee
at Cafe Du Monde, New Orleans, Louisiana.

"I serve only serious coffee."

"No coffee can be good in the mouth that doesn't first send a sweet offering of odor to the nostrils."
Henry Ward Beecher

Nothing says, delicious, and oh so good, then great gossip over coffee!

It appears the lady facing us is having something a bit stronger!

Coffees on - dew drop in, okay?

"Sometimes, it seems I've measured out my life in coffee spoons."
Sure I know what you're thinking.  These are mostly cowboys, (without their cows) in cafe located in Junction, Texas.

.....and then,
It seems women tend to share coffee more often as couples or smaller groups -

Like these two women at a cafe in Benton Harbor, Michigan. On a hot July day in 1940.

"Is our waitress ever going to bring our coffee? There's nobody else in this cafe.  What is she doing?"

Aren't those cars in the reflection especially nice?

"A cup of coffee shared with a friend is happiness tasted and time well spent."

We've got sunshine, good food, great company and fresh coffee. What more do you need?

It seems the language of coffee is shared all across the world.  Here we're looking at an outside Moorish cafe, Tunis, Tunisia about 1899.  It doesn't seem that much eating or drinking is going on.  The art of conversation is more relevant here.

Mostar, Cafe Luft, Herzegowina, Austria-Hungary
between ca. 1890 and 1900 ca.

Dining with Paprika chicken with dumplings, cucumber salad, Strudel and coffee, completes a tasty meal.

Man buying coffee and items from a snack vendor in shop along a street in Gangtok, Sikkim.

It seems that in America there are a string of odd but creatively descriptive cafes and coffee houses in various areas.

Looking at the S Bridge Cafe Advertisement Sculpture (world's best cup of coffee!) Little Wheeling Creek, Elm Grove, Ohio County, West Virginia.

"No one can understand the truth until he drinks of coffee's frothy goodness."

That has to be the most eloborate looking cow stall I've ever seen - perhaps a prize-winning cow?

The reflection in the window of the cafe is indeed very nice. I can't resist having a cup of coffee after reading this post...

Another wonderful presentation! If you would like to have all of your pictures be around the same size and fully within the boundaries, you may be able to adjust their size on the HTML page. Well, at least that works with embedded videos, which I adjust to be 568 in width and 400 in height. Since the height of your pictures probably don't matter, only the width will need to be adjusted. If you would like some help with it, do not hesitate to email me at FishHawk7@gmail.com.

I love your observation about the language of coffee shared among nations. So true! But -- am I the only person who actually likes cow manure?? LOL -- maybe I just associate it with the richness it adds to the soil in a garden. The smell doesn't bother me. OK, I'm leaving now.

Having lived in N.O. for a few years, I vote for Cafe Du Monde :-)

Fantastic series of sepia photos.

Well I've had a fine cup of coffee through your photographs. What great illustrations on a theme. I've never had one brewed on a fire so I like the outdoor photo, looks like its noon and time for coffee.

Joy, looking at their shadows I think you're right!

Jerry thanks for the tip, actually I make the photos myself some to stand out more than others, perhaps that's not a good thing? It just kind of goes with my story line so to speak!

Wendy, oh I like it too, and actually live really (across the road just a bit) right around lots of it! Ha! Ha!

Jana, glad you liked it too, when I found it I couldn't resist! My grandfather in his last 20 or more years tended to cattle on a large ranch in Arizona, and still had his own private cows....the last dear cow I remember him having, was Rosebud! yes Rosebud the cow!

An enjoyable journey through cafe culture. You've served up another wonderful batch of pictures for our delight, and chosen some very apt quotations to accompany them as usual. For some reason I've got "You're the Cream in My Coffee" running through my head now.

All this coffee is not good for me; I'm surprised you didn't mention the steaks on sale - even if none were visible.

Bob, oh no way the cows would cry right! Steaks oh that is a bad six letter word! Ha! Ha! I hope you're enjoying Michigan your daughter and family and...when is your birthday again?!!!

Little Nell, and you've just added extra sugar too! Thanks so much! :)

I love the odd roadside sculpture and the cafe with a big coffee pot on the roof.

My favorite is your "gossipers",
even though they're all great pics.
And yes, I measure my life in coffee spoon!!
Having my morning coffee right now, those beignets would go down nicely...

Enjoyed all of the wonderful photos from the Library of Congress. Aren't they a great resource for old pictures? My favorite is the closeup of the ladies in the coffee shop with the hats.

Oh my goodness, what wonderful photos, we do love our cofee don't we. People love any excuse to gather together and visit and coffee makes the perfect reason. And what on earth is a cow house?

I have a color photo of the Bridge Cafe in WV. I took it circa 1985 while headed to the WWVA Jamboree live radio show in Wheeling. A close look reveals a plastic deer over the entrance to the place. I would guess that it is out of business by now.
