SEPIA SATURDAY
Alan's theme this week features a Greek Cymbal Dance and it's just in time for May Day Celebrations. Since I've already posted a May Day post for Sepia Saturday before, A Maying We Shall Go, see it here, I'm going to stretch Alan's theme into, Do Dah Day!
Directly from Birmingham, Alabama here are some photos from
The Do Dah Day Parade
photos taken by Carol Highsmith
You can view more of her collection at The Library of Congress Photos and Prints department.
The Do Dah Day event has been going on for more than thirty years, and it offers a chance for folks to dress up their pets (mainly dogs) as well as yourself, and to parade through town together. All funds raised go to animal charities.
Plenty of places for pets to cool down or catch a drink of water.

I'm curious to hear what you do to celebrate May Day?

nothing here! :)
I am SURPRISED that there aren't more dressed-up cats!

Obviously, ifthethunderdontgetya has never owned a cat(?) else they'd know why you don't see cats dressed up for a parade! Good luck with that!!! But the Do Dah Day Parade looks like a lot of fun & for a very good cause! I used to make up little wildflower bouquets & go around the neighborhood on May 1st leaving them on front porches anonymously - except for the house with the big black snarling dog!
That looks like fun! It’s a public hoiliday here in Lanzarote, but then there are always fiestas of one kind or another - any excuse for a parade!
Looks similar to our doo dah parade in Pasadena every year, a humorous response to the beautiful and famous Rose Bowl parade
All top pictures, love the little white dog.
Greetings,
Filip
La Nightingail, I was being FUNNY.
(I first got a cat when I was 6 years old, I named him "Whack".)

Lovely photos, but why Do Dah. What has that got to do with animals apart from a race track. Pardon my ignorance !
Very funny! I think "Zippity" is the missing word to help @boundforoz. I doubt many pets look forward to this celebration though.
Well we used to celebrate Labour Day here in Queensland on 1st May. Some still do but it's not a Public Holiday anymore - sniff.
We don't do anything here. And if we did, it would have been on a cold day this year!!
I love the Do Dah Day idea -- wish there was one where I live.
I like your DooDah parade better than our local one, which just makes fun of patriotic traditions. Yours is for such a great cause and gives dogs such a nice opportunity to be out and about.
The Animal Humane Society in the Twin Cities, Minnesota has a "Walk for Animals" to raise money that took place today. I have never participated but it sounds similar to the Doo Dah parade.
We don't celebrate May Day, but if we had to think of some festivity to do that day such a Do Dah Day would be high on my wish list! And I agree, don't try to dress up your cat (a dressed up Elephant would be nice though).
Love The Do Dah Day Parade. I grew up in Birmingham before Do Dah I am afraid. I have a Niece still there who is very much into animal rescue. I will have to ask her about Do Dah Day.
the One In The Sunglasses Looks Like Paris Hilton.:)
I'd never heard of a Do Dah Day parade - Google has quite few entries. Nothing celebrated here in Oz fo May Day, but mid May each year the RSPCA raises money by a Million paws Walk which happens in any town which wants to organize one.
Love the name!
We have lots of parties with themes - I can't wait to have a Doo Dah party! Fun!
Well there is a do dah parade annually in San Francisco, quite a different gathering than this...a fun take on the theme
The most dressing up of an animal I ever did was tying a piece of buttered bread to a cat to see if when she jumped off of a table the cat would "always land on her feet" or "the bread would land buttered side down" The cat landed on her feet. Maybe the bread would have to weigh as much as the cat to be a true scientific experiment.
I let May 1st come and go without even remembering to turn my calendar page. Oh now I remember why. I was angry at my crazy neighbor who accused me of planning on setting a fire in a pile of brush on April 30th. She made a point of calling the Air Resources Board and fire department about me, though all of it was in her imagination. Hopefully by next May the trees I plan on putting on the property line will have her hidden from me come May Day. I would much prefer to see the lovely images you posted.
