Sepia Saturday - 238 - 26 July 2014

Suffering has been happening for far too long of a time.  Lest we forget?  When will all such atrocities cease?

You'll see this week, I am somewhat following our theme, (signs) while we visit the rough waters of yesterday, on the waves of today's own atrocities.

Thank you Alan, at Sepia Saturday for allowing us to post about things of yesterday, long ago or perhaps in the not that distant past.

These Shoes are a haunting reminder (sign) and not just shoes in art.

JANUARY 1945

Shoes on the Danube Bank, explained here.

A remarkable blog post about these Shoes on the Danube.

Even before I read the article, I guessed what was coming. Horrible Horrible Horrible. Still, it's good to remember.

What a coincidence, just yesterday I was watching the movie" Before Sunrise and there was a scene mentioning about Danube tragedy, very sad.

What a haunting image for an event that I knew nothing about. Thanks for sharing.

This was new to me too.

This is very poignant and memorable. It certainly made me pay greater attention than I would to a plaque or monument.

If I get to Budapest (on my wish list) then I will definitely visit.

Such a moving memorial, serving as a sign that what happened there hasn't been forgotten and should never be repeated.

A moving picture with those shoes in memory of the victims!

A simple photograph of shoes on the shore and a simple plaque - but what a dreadful story and so moving.

Oh Karen - thank you for sharing that story. What a poignant memorial. I just wish we had an answer/solution for what is happening today. It all seems so pointless and horrendous.

Signs and art don't have to be big to convey an important message about memory.

My daughter was in Buda Pest several years ago on business, but never mentioned the shoes so she must not have seen that particular memorial. What a terribly sad thing.

I wanted to comment that I had seen a similar work of art last year but then I noticed the bridge (and the hill in the background we climbed, pfff) and I realized these are the same shoes we accidentally encountered while walking along the Danube (we had time to spend waiting for the parliament building to open). There was not a clear sign, or a special dedicated place, the shoes are just standing there in a deserted corner; very impressive.
