Thematic Photographic #152 Vertical

Once again Carmi from "Written Inc. Blog"  has presented a new theme.....and it's "Vertical"

if you want to give it a try too please join us at
http://writteninc.blogspot.com/2011/07/thematic-photographic-152-vertical.html

So we begin with what appears to be Manhattan, "Vehement silhouettes of Manhattan that vertical city with unimaginable diamonds" .....as Le Corbusier said it so well.....

Ah vertical is often captured in most art .... everywhere we go...."To be great, art has to point somewhere." - Anne Lamott

"The finest works of art are precious, among other reasons, because they make it possible for us to know, if only imperfectly and for a little while, what it actually feels like to think subtly and feel nobly." - Aldous Huxley

"The timelessness of a concept has to be woven into the running warp of dying time, vertical power has to be wedded to the horizontal earth."  - Ella Maillart
Oh yes, a work in progress...it offers us with a sense of place.....illuminating and insightful....
"Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life"....-Pablo Picasso
"Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which to shape it."- Bertolt Brecht

Good memories. My wife and I spent New Year's Eve on a sailboat looking at that shot about 20 years ago.

Fantastic quotes to go with the perfect representations of vertical. The perspective leaves my neck feeling like it's been craning, even though I've been staring at a computer screen. :)

I really like the simple elegance of the hanging lights. The perspective on the building is very cool. Where is that skyline of Manhattan? I thought it was Las Vegas, but when JJ mentioned looking at it from a sailboat, I couldn't think of anywhere near the strip you could sail.

Very nice. I really like the hanging lights - simple shapes which look lovely.
Have you photo-shopped the colours in the first shop, or are the buildings really those colours?

Karen all of your photos are nice, but I LOVE the first one! Fantastic quotes to go with your photos.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Great photographs. I walk around so often looking up - in search of the vertical - that I have been known to walk into lamp-posts.

The lights have it for me. I have some pictures of the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art - the foyer is festooned with lights enhanced by the very high ceiling.
That wip shot is great.

Thanks for confirming that, I was sure that Manhattan skyline was in Vegas. I guess JJ was talking about the real Manahttan?

Max- maybe he was, I wondered too, if he was in Nevada, (being Dec. 31st I could see them on Lake Mead, maybe....) and perhaps it jogged his memory from my quote with Manhattan, they do have some pretty awesome events for New Year's Eve (I've only heard!)...sometimes it's hard to say....I purposely left out the city just for fun!
