Sepia Saturday # 91 - Saturday 10 September 2011

This is a SEPIA SATURDAY post

Our picture prompt from Alan for this week's theme is a photo entitled: "President Wilson on a Speaking Tour" and while Alan mentions there is much going on in his photo the two "Secret Service" men have captivated my full attention.

       SPEAKING OUT WITH FACIAL/BODY EXPRESSIONS
                    ONE LOOK  EXPLAINS EVERYTHING.
She was hesitant, while  he continued to press her for specifics, that she was not ready to divulge.
Had perhaps her mockery angered him to a point where he felt belittled by her silence?

These are the two secret service men protecting President Wilson posted by Alan.

Their fixed focus draws me in.

Speaking of photos that overflow with expressiveness....

This post card declares, A Leap Year Frame Up
which leads me to this question.  The tale that followed one single gentleman and three lovely ladies asking for his hand in marriage, on this leap year?
Oh which lady's proposal shall he accept?

If you study this photo very carefully you will notice a man hiding underneath the table.

So, of course we instantly know what this angry man wants answered.

"Marie, whose hat is this?"

One glance at this handsome young man and you almost hear the voice of his eternal soul.....

His troubles were few, his pleasures were many and do you notice a slight, almost comical happiness about him?
"You just know he's about to tell you something."

So, where ever you find yourself this week, think about your own expressions as you journey along...and catch the little things happening.  It's always in the details that we discover the greatest joys.....

If you want to view more Sepia Saturday photos or have your own to post go here

As always, you can completely ignore Alan's theme, or use anything within it.  Or, simply post things from a long time ago....Of course Sepia is always welcomed at Sepia Saturday!

I like the idea of expressions. I've done trains. I will look for expressiveness. The man is hiding under the table. Let's not make it worse then it is! ;-)

The Leap Year Frame Up postcard is a hoot! I know which one I'd accept. The stereoview with the man under the bed is extraordinary - I wouldn't be asking about the hat or the adultery, but I'd want to know who designed the psychedelic decor!

It is your first photo that had me asking for more specifics.

Kristin - such good eyes you have. Hard to believe a grown man could fit under a table like that...! ha ha!

Karen S. said...

Brett - yes more specifics would be nice!

Howard - Let me guess, the blonde girl on the left maybe? ;)

The frame-up is wonderful. Someone has written ‘Eva’ on the lady on the right, so perhaps they knew the model. I like the first photo too, you could imagine all sorts of intrigues. Clever take on the theme,

I was wondering about the first photo too. It looks staged, but there is no caption as would usually be found on a postcard.

Oh that man under the table is my favorite....such a story there, but not quite smart, hardly hides him does it? Yes expressions share a unique form of communication.Lots of tales could come from this array.

Postcardy, it too is a post card although nothing written on the back, simply blank, and it's all in English with the place stamp here and name and address and etc...too bad but the photo itself is priceless to me, it looks rather real to me...almost like she's scared. But the Leap Year one has something new to me , it has printed on the side (K) Semi-photo you probably have seen that a lot! Thanks for stopping by!

Little Nell - Thanks! The Frame-Up was stamped with a mailing date of Jun 13 1908 from Peoria, Ill and it has (K) Semi-photo stamped on the side of it. Is that because there is writing on it too? It was printed by the post card maker! What great eyes you have the card was addressed to Miss Elvie Johnson from Washington, Ills.! Enjoy your weekend!

Pat - thanks, and glad to see you stopping by! Isn't it amazing how we could come up with so many stories for them all. The first one is almost scary from watching too many C.S.I shows and such...she really looks to me more than slightly frightened by him! Enjoy your weekend!

It's the expression of the lady on the right in the Frame Up that caught my attention. If looks could kill!

Bob S. I know what you mean! Those words fit for the man in the first photo too! Enjoy your weekend Bob! It's good to be able to comment on your blog again. I wonder if Alan is having trouble on commenting on mine...haven't heard from him in ages! Blogger = Grrrrrrrrrrr

Hi Karen, Just working my way through all the posts and enjoying a leisurely weekend for a change. You perfectly picked up on the point I was trying to make about the looks of those secret service men and the whole fact that two different stories were taking place in the prompt picture. And there is so much going on in your examples - perfect examples of the interaction of looks and expressions.

Alan - thanks, glad to see you here, I've missed your popping in and out of posts! Enjoy your week!

Great post! You could write a whole story about any one of them.

Karen, you have a great eye. It's great to put these all together. The stereo view is hilarious. I found myself puzzled by the last one. The young man look as if he hasn't grown into his hands yet. Such delicate features and thin legs - and huge hands!

I met a retired Secret Service man and he was as formidable as you would imagine. You almost felt like you were talking to someone who was constantly analyzing everything you said and every movement you made. It was unsettling.

Good take on this weeks "theme."

Karen S. said...

Christine I know exactly, just looking at him brings pause and so many questions...he is to me very remarkable..so much soul sitting in one simple shot!

Tattered and Lost I know what you mean about most of them, but I was lucky once to have met one who was completely unlike that in his off hours, I catch myself thinking about him every now and then, what happened to him, it was long ago...maybe he wasn't as good being a secret service man, although I believe he was probably good at putting work apart from daily life...you hope to think so anyway! Good point you made though!

A clever collection on the subtleties of expression. Leonardo knew it when he did the Mona Lisa, but the photographer can capture it too.

in the first pic, i feel he's asking for trouble...

in the 3rd pic, one girl seems dreamy while the other seems worried.... (for good reason???)

4th: "oh ciel!! mon mari!!"

5th one: HEARTBREAKER!!!!

fun post!!

You found wonderful photos for this week! I think that the first one with the tree is my favorite. They do look pretty intense.

Thanks so much for stopping by to visit.
