Kerry Says, Where do you go to?

From Imaginary gardens and real toads, Kerry is challenging us to consider the theme of Dichotomy for our poem.  Of course, we can take any form and are free to explore any subject matter.

My first choice was to write a poem about mammals, involving those that live on land and those that live on water.

I thought the Jackalope, (a mythical animal of North America Folklore) also called a fearsome critter would be a worthy poem, but you'll see that homo sapiens took control.

So, my poem encompasses, what you see, isn't always what you get, and what you've come to know, isn't always so.

Even Small Stars Shine Bright

Diamonds we believe, are a girl's best friend.
Or so we're told.
Except, those diamonds which steal
our loved ones time.
In a game of innings and outings
where time
runs by batting and fielding.
Do, however accept in time
those diamond knives for eye surgery
down the line.

Did you know,

We believe
If all the Paris Hiltons
and Kim Kardashians
of the world had poor fathers
and no connections
they'd go from riches to rags
in minutes.

We know, right is better than wrong.
Yet who determines wrong from right?
We idolize those from rags to riches-
But run from those in battered stitches
and clothes torn and tattered.
As if their lives never mattered.

Why must beggars be choosy?
Because evil lurks in places you'd least expect.
Shouldn't every one's dreams come true-
like mine and yours too?
Is that too much to accept?
Isn't fate really up to you
in all that we do?

This challenge took you an a very thought-provoking journey, and you make a valid point about the main stream idolizing those who go from rags to riches without sparing I thought for those you may travel in the opposite direction. I also had fun exploring the links and learning something. thank you.

It isn't just the Paris Hiltons and Kim Kardashians.

Think of our plutocratic overlords: Where would Charles and David Koch be, if each one hadn't been a billionaire at birth? Yet both enjoy lecturing us about pulling ourselves up by our own bootstraps.

I enjoyed reading this Karen, a wonderful gathering of interesting thoughts. And we share 50% of our DNA with bananas? I have become very interested in this kind of thing lately. Everything on this planet is connected, and we share many of the same genes. It is mind boggling and so amazing to think we are just scratching the tip of the ice-berg.

have often thought
a very good man
ought to be
a girl's very best friend.
of course, it helps
if his pockets are loaded
with gold, or such.

I don't really know what's going on in this poem, but it sparkles and I enjoyed it.

There's a wry sense of humor at play here--fate is certainly both beyond us and within our control to some degree--Agh! Thanks. k.

Great light tone for some difficult subjects, and a wry twist, especially in that last line. The diamond lines were my favorites.

The way we look on outer appearance is a lot like we might look on a banana as a distant relative... truly this was a nice rollercoaster poem

Diamonds on Jupiter and Saturn? Bananas? I love this! You tackle a lot of meat in this poem and you do it beautifully!
