Sepia Saturday - 173 - 20 April 2013

Practice makes perfect!

Dear Sepia Saturday friends here we are again
only instead of hiking for fun this week
we're out shooting for dinner!
Yikes!

Well, like the photo above, some of us are just practicing for future days of shooting for dinner or pastime.

How could I ever even think of finding a photo better than this darling and daring subject with his majestic catch?

It wouldn't be possible.

Is he proud or is he...hmm ? Quite the expression at any rate.

It's raining, it's melting, it's snowing? What time of year is it again?

Can you date this photo?  Too bad there isn't a vehicle or something that could date this photo, right?

Answer TIME.
My Sepia Saturday post last week had a mystery photo-

Most of you, that supplied an answer, albeit, windy-city or other such title, everyone was absolutely correct.  My mystery photo is one of my favorite destinations to visit, Chicago.  One that I can easily drive to, even if it does take about 6 hours to do it.

But, unless you've walked it- I don't think you'll ever appreciate just how quaint a city it is.  Seriously.

Chicago River Bascule Bridge
Spanning Chicago River at Clarke Street
Just this week after steady downpours caused major flooding and sink holes in Chicago the storm swollen Chicago River was allowed to flow into Lake Michigan.

That's a really big deal too.

Getting back to my real post.

I'm focusing more on one of Alan's comments that went along with his theme photo- he wrote,

"I just feel like something a little odd."

Me too, lately.

It's almost as if my inspiration or muse, has flown the coop, possibly before it gets shot and hung like the birds above.
Oh my!

So, I am closing with a bit of odd myself.

Enjoy!

Well I HAVE walked Chicago...at least...on Streetview....when I worked out it was Chicago, and probably a bridge (the barrier and special traffic lights) I then had to cross every bridge, both ways, to check them out, and I never realised how quaint it was with each street having its own bridge across the river. Unfortunately I started at midnight with the most southerly bridge and worked north then east. What a shame it was about the last bridge...I did not get to bed until 2 am!!.... but was pleased to stand outside the Wrigley building, and to read about that.

Another point..related to your comments. Everyone has heard of Pullman of railroad fame. When reading about him a few years ago I came across reference to George Pullman's other great contribution, not so well known. In 1860 he was one of a consortium of engineers that literally raised Chicago, jacked up inch by inch, out of the bog on which it was built. It was an extraordinary project, and anyone interested should read this:

Karen you're right, those are rather odd things in the last few photos. What I'm really curious about is the motorbikes with the guys lying sideways... what the heck are they doing? I know you wouldn't catch me on the 'passengers' side!

The photo of the weather, by chance is that a recent shot made to look like an old one? It looks a lot like what we have going on here right now; mud, snow, slush, rain, wind... it's the all season weather not spring.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Hey, Karen! Those gymnasts kind of freak me out. Can you imagine if that picture is true of the lady with the leopard walking down the street?

The only place that I have ever been in Chicago is the airport, but I would like to go there on vacation sometime; it looks beautiful.

I hope that you get some sunshine this week.

Hugs,

Kathy M.

Those acrobatic shots freaked me out ~ Thanks for sharing these photos ~

We are having a terrible snow day this weekend, still far from spring ~

These are fantastic photos in sepia and monochrome!

That shot of the acrobats with the Chrysler building below them gives me the creeps, but it's very much in the style of the time. Quiet a few similar photos were taken during that era, including one of photo-journalist Margaret Bourke-White that I featured in a post Musing in Manhattan, several years ago. Great selection of photos, thank you.

A great selection of the strange and unusual. Something about big cities has always attracted and inspired odd photos.

"21 Bits, by Karen" has been included in the A Sunday Drive for this week. Be assured that I hope this helps to point even more new visitors in your direction.

You found a great selection of odd! Those acrobats make me dizzy from the safety of my chair on the ground floor. Just watched the end of a motorcycle race at Circuit of the Americas a few minutes ago. The winner nearly laid down his bike on each turn - he was so low to the ground!

Oops! That last comment was from me. Typing one handed while a puppy lays on my other arm.

You can't beat a bit of odd. In blogging terms odd means different, not ordinary, unexpected and just a bit fascinating. That's the kind of blogs I like - the kind of thing I always find in your posts. That's odd. That's nice.

As far as odd goes,
mission accomplished!!
As for those motorcycle acrobats,
I do hope there were no mailboxes
nor stop signs alongside that road,
if you get my drift...
:D~

Here's my thoughts on that last photo: a) nice cheetah b) crazy lady c) fox stole? d) fox stole + cheetah= death to crazy lady. That is all.

I have watched the tv series ER which had quite some outdoor scenes taking place in Chicago during its 15 year run. I think I would like the river and the lake, but I would not appreciate the wind. Be careful with your muse!

I was born in Chicago and lived there only 7 years. But I still always say I'm from there. It's such a beautiful city with always so much going on. Thanks for the photo of the river and bridge.

Odd indeed! The guys on the motorcycles, what can I say, that looks like an accident waiting to happen!

And what are those people doing that are all propped on top of each other on the side of that building!?!?

I must look around Chicago (if only to find me some Blues+Jazz). I've flown in and out..had coffee in the airport..and marveled at the February snow on the suburban rooftops flying-in......but its not like truly Knowing the Place!
