A Dinner Table at Night - 1884
Image by Tess Kincaid - for The Mag
Artist - John Singer Sargent
In the autumn of her life
she sits with her husband
not hearing one word he has to say.
At first it appears to be a glass of wine in her left hand,
but tucked away in her right hand,
she clutches this love note.

I'm mesmerized most by your
eyes. Your sweet voice calms my
aching soul. The virtues of love
should be ours. You are the most
delicate flower I've yet to embrace.
Please, I beg you to meet me by eight
eyes. Your sweet voice calms my

delicate flower I've yet to embrace.
Please, I beg you to meet me by eight
at the fountain gate.
Affectionately yours,
J.S.

Autumn not...looks like summer is coming ~ That note was a nice touch ~
How truly creative to do it this way. Great use of more than one form.
Ahh... this is a different twist. She is the one who has the secret lover. Nice!;)
Quite a story you tell, and in so few words...
Did she go or did she hesitate. Those are smooth words. Nice twist Karen.
Beautiful blog!
Little Nell, the fine lady that she is, I'm sure she declined, but the very thought of it, weighed ever so heavy in her heart! I do believe that John Singer Sargent was quite a ladies man around town....!
But of course, she meets him.
Beware, Babooshka, it could be a trap ! , lovely
I'd tell her to go for it, if she's not happy in her current relationship then dump the man and get out and live a little....oops wait a second that's the old me talking! lol
Awesome writing once again Karen!
Are you sure that is a wine glass and not a cell phone and her lover didn't just text her that message? I like that painting.
I like it! Lets us wonder what happens later that evening! :)
now I am interested!!!
Her expression certainly agrees with your interpretation of the image. :)
Wonderful stuff, bring on Chapter 2, I want to see what happens.
A tinge of mystery and may be sadness. It's up to her. She should salvage the situation! Nice write Karen!

Sage, thanks for the giggle! In today's world you are probably right! Oh that would be so sad, to never have a hand written note again!
Oh Wow...
Anna Karenina of the day.
Delightful! And what comes next?
Nice twist indeed.
P.S. I think the husband suspects.
haha...she sure does look lost in thought. nice take on that picture!
Nice take on the painting. It does seem that she is hiding something.
Will there be a sequel?
The Opposite of having A Drink Problem ......
nicely written...

She does have a distant look in her eyes, doesn't she? Her husband should be more careful about inviting artists to dinner.
i like the two voices here...nice way to look at it.
Would J.S. be John Sargent? If only she could get the boring fellow in her life to end the evening, so she can enjoy her little tryst with the painter, for whom she is so desirous!
A lovely presentation, Karen and so in keeping with the secretive, literary love stories imagined of women of the late Victorian era.
ha i like the initials being that of the artist...well is seems she has some life left in her yet...smiles....
