Sepia Saturday - 159 - 12- January 2013

Welcome to more adventures of sand and sea.  Alan's theme photo this week is of a bathing suit clad woman sitting on the beach!  Yes, he's bringing us out of our present day frozen tundra's to gape at life in water or, on the beach.

SEPIA SATURDAY

Beginning with-

Double checking that we're all in appropriate dress on the beach.  All bathing suits must not be over six inches from the knee.

Bill Norton, Washington, D.C. beach policeman.

Bathers on the beach Atlantic City, New Jersey, Brady's Baths on pavilion. Between 1900 - 1910.

News Tribune Newsboys' taking time off to plunge into a pool.  Sometime between 1900-1910.

SEPIA SATURDAY- Stopping by a few Minnesota lakes.

The Swimming Hole, at Lester Park, in Duluth, Minnesota in 1904.

Boys will be boys!

Not sharing words but still feeling content together.

What's the next best thing to swimming and lounging on the beach?

Having a front row seat to all the action.

People watching.

Amazingly enough, this photo was taken in 1936, and still today it appears pretty much like it did back then in most places around the lake.

Wow what a job, to measure the distance from the knee to the bottom of the bathing suit on pretty ladies on the beach! And I was jealous of the Southampton Police beach patrol in their shorts, shades and sunscreen riding up and down the beach on ATV's.

Well golly gee, Bill Norton certainly had a good job!

What a glorious collection of pictures and the last one is a hoot. However the newsboys in the small pool leads them all for me. Actually I think I'd rather be alongside one of those lakes.

Hey, Karen! Is that a huge slide at Wildwood Landing? How fun. I loved all of these pictures, but the one with the boys and the waterfall ... that is my favorite kind of swimming hole.

Thanks for finding all of these for us. Oh, I think that the beach cop must have loved his job, and those boys in the pool got away with wearing a lot less than the others on the beach during the same years.

Happy Sepia Saturday!

I love those pictures. The 1920s is the era in which I should have been born. I used that first photo, or one very similar, in my Pop Culture class. Love that era!

A wonderful collection Karen and I love the couple sitting in 'companionable silence'. We're watching 'Boardwalk Empire' here, and I was straining for a glimpse of Mr Thompson in the Atlantic city one.

This is a wonderful post Karen! The photos of Lake Itasca, Minnesota are beautiful. The lake looks so peaceful. And that last photo is just a hoot!

One could teach a fascinating geography lesson based on Sepia Saturday photographs. Your selection send me in search of my USA map and they set me off on a magnificent treasure trail of American beaches.

A fun series of pictures! That first one reminds me of high school, when we had to submit to measuring the length of our skirts if they were thought too short. And that last one - what was the idea behind the black ribbons tied around her legs? Too funny!

Great shots for Sepia Saturday...and my home state of Minnesota as well! My family were in Rice Lake, later St Paul where I was born...

What a great job - I wonder how the job description read, and what the qualifications were.

I've seen hats worn recently like that one in the last image.

What a great series of pictures! And whoever heard of a beach policeman measuring distances on a ladies' leg. Reminds me of Mr Humphries measuring the inside leg in "Are you being served" I believe it was.

Sometimes I cannot appreciate the current swimming apparel resulting in some kind of 'meat exhibition'.

Lake Itasca looks very nice, in Holland there are also many pretty lakes.

my aunt and uncle rented out cabins on some lake in Minnesota (not sure which one). but those photos are very nostalgic. It would be so fun to paddle a canoe around that lake.

Never heard of that kind of beach policeman before!

The swimming apparel might be the same but there must have been a rivalry between seaside people and lakeside people over who had the most fun.

I love the one with the women lifting their skirts. I bet those two holding onto mom's hands were just chomping at the bit to get their own feet wet!

A real treat, Karen!
