The Mag #156

The past is never where you think you left it.
 - Katherine Anne Porter

Wind of History by Jacek Yerka

The Winter Road

Embracing panic as if I were one with wheels
rather than feet.
Every tire track warps my soul-
 covering the roar of ages.

With one light burning
and gate wide open
I head down Old Winter Road
carrying a dairy of thoughts
underneath my coat.

The last traces of snow
are shivering puddles
upon which, no winter’s fate
would ever descend,
beneath spring’s balmy breath.

Every now and then
those memories of mine
catch up to me.
I’ve grown to expect
their succession of ruins
walking silently, alongside of me
Daunting every step I take.

Memories have a way of doing that, don't they?

Nice that you mentioned the wheels. I think maybe the car is trying to reach the house, and I see there is a light in one of the windows. I hadn't noticed that before. Nice take on the prompt!

I heard in a weather report that it was -25 in Minneapolis yesterday morning (I think). So, may your new header help make that a distant memory much sooner than later.

Spring's balmy breath

sounds great

but summer's balmy breath makes more sense

(I just think too much)

Fantastic writing once again Karen, I had to go back and really look at the photo, it wasn't what I thought it was at first glance... funny how that works.

Have a wonderful week!

Mac- I always like how you think!

Cloudia- I know! I was very eager to write about this painting, but the more I studied it the darker I felt! That was not my main intention!

Darlin- I totally agree with you about my own feelings after first glance! This was like a two-fold feeling for me! I may just put another piece to it- just for me! :)

Anthony- thanks, I just followed my thoughts! With a bit of kicking and screaming along the way! Hehehehe!

Gerry- I so wanted to do more with that cool car, but the car tracks kept coming into my head! So many of them it was like a person prone to panic attacks trying to leave their own driveway!

21 Wits said...

Alan- if only that were true here! Any puddles now are frozen blocks of steel! Yikes! Then to add to (winter's bad-humor) a snow storm is in the works again! Double- if not triple YIKESSS!!

Jerry- I know you are so right- this painting sure doesn't fit with my weather at all!

Kutamun- No I'm going to google it now, and then after hearing it, I may recall it. Thanks!

21 Wits said...

Laurie- They sure do! Most of mine (unlike this poem) are all happy ones though! But this painting was a bit far from happy!

Kutamun- so far I like Renee Geyer's Foggy Highway- it does relate well with this photo!
Check it out for those who haven't heard it before- it's magical!

Well done Karen, I enjoyed this so much that I read it several times extracting different meanings from it. I liked the shivering puddles unaffected by the onset of spring with its balmy breath.

Spring is coming soon, Karen.

That's what the cardinals are telling me, at least...
