"I refuse to confide and don't like it when people write about art." Balthus

The King of Cats 1935, Balthus

"I always feel the desire to look for the extraordinary in ordinary things; to suggest, not to impose, to  leave always a slight touch of mystery in my paintings." - Balthus

What Mystery Has He Painted Here?
in his "The King of Cats.

"As a matter of fact, my tie is too short.  So what?"

His Painterly Eye Speaks

Like no other voice
he treads a solely pace
by lonesome grace.

I see a man of long legs
stretched out before me
with clenched brows he
peers through eyes
like riding a specter
alone
in his empty caravan
of alluring beddable eyes
feasting
 in his own partisan fare
of self-prepared fortune
towing no lines
owning no rules.

Thank you Tess Kincai, for intriguing and challenging Magpies!

What delicious lines. I wonder if that was the mystery of it... self-love for an image of the self.

It's easier to toe a line, than to tow a line...

Loved this post! It's a talent to see the extraordinary in the ordinary, that's for sure.
