Pictured running with his book bag and lunch box in hand is Richard Mahler, his father is the lighthouse keeper and school is a four mile jeep ride away.
The lighthouse is located on the Great South Bay, in southern Suffolk County, New York on the western end of Fire Island, a barrier island off the southern coast of Long Island. The lighthouse is located within Fire Island National Seashore, and just to the east of Robert Moses State Park.
"Lighthouses are not just stone, brick, metal and glass.
There's a human story at every lighthouse; that's the story I want to tell."

Hello, I love all the lighthouses. It would be fun to go around and see as many as we can. The last shot is cute! Have a happy day!
Hello Karen!:) Lovely shots of the lighthouse and fence. They do stand out as amazing towering structures, but sadly most of them are obsolete now.
we love lighthouse. i am not sure we have ever seen this one? i will look back. ( :
Karen, the park is on the way to Mount Assunção in Northern Portugal.
Funnily enough I thought about you when I made my post, and how it would look great with some of your gnomes, and other forest figures, hiding in some of the crevices.:))
Great shot of the lighthouse and love the quote ~ Especially enjoy the vintage photo of the little boy 'off to school' ~ great post !
Happy Week to you ~ ^_^

Very nice looking lighthouse and fencing. It was fun to see the old photos and the little boy running to head off to school. I believe Fire Island is mentioned in a Bob Seger song.
Oh I LOVE this post and your images. Lighthouses are so cool. Hug B
Lighthouses speak to us all. Great post.
That B&W shot of the young Richard Mahler running for school has captured my heart! Just perfect!
such cute shots. i like that opening quote, too.
I wonder why we all seem to love lighthouses? ;-)
I used to go to Robert Moses S.P.* in my NYC days. It was crowded and a trek from the city, but there sure was a lot of sand!
* A little ways and some causeways from the light house.
