THIS IS A THEMATIC PHOTOGRAPHIC POST
 After finishing a week like this last one, I need a melting spot....and I can find a perfect place, by posting a few more photo's for Carmi's Thematic Photographic post...........

Just when you think you don't have one triangle so many just pop up before your eyes...

Lost inside these lines of two, three or four or more...trace together all these angles and where do you end up?

What is it about those who wear a tall pointed red hat that makes them  just so cute?

You really have to get to know these little gnomes.....

Did I tell you about my fascination of taking pictures at 599 Summit Avenue in St. Paul?

Well on this day, outside what once was F. Scott Fitzgerald's residence the owner of the house came outside to (perhaps tempt me) or maybe just water her plants.  She also brought out a large pitcher of what appeared to be iced tea.  Did I respond to her gaze, yes with a polite nod and quick hello and off I went, before the spider, or rather, owner invited me into her web, I mean patio!

So many times the big picture has so many little pictures locked inside of it....like these next two photos...

Just like life's little things tangled between life's big things......

But there's nobody else in sight.
I was spellbound in secret silence
It just made no sense....
Oops, I nearly took a tumble
into the river Zumbler....
Just seeing their arms dangling
It sent a chill crawling
Up and down my spine
I’m sure anyone else would whine
At this silly sight
Alone out here tonight
At half past midnight….

Thematic Photographic # 166 triangular

THIS IS A THEMATIC PHOTOGRAPHIC Post

 .... Carmi, from Written Inc. blog, has selected "triangular" or even if it suggests one, as this week's three-sided theme...........
or as Carmi phrased it, "bring your threesies."


...........so grabbing from my private stash of photos..............

              

Anyone care for hot dogs, popcorn, ice cream or maybe a soft drink or perhaps the rest room?  All of those are found right here under the three-sided-triangular rooftops in Linden Hills, on Lake Harriet.
It's last year's snow on the roof.

                  This triangular shape caught my attention while window shopping at the Galleria Shops in Edina earlier this year.....still not sure what it is....

Here's a threesie-triangular-sided flag.....It was a happy 4th of July Parade, except for the over load of mosquitoes.....

Have you ever attended a Norwegian wedding?  Then you know what this is....if not, traditionally it's a kransekake or Norwegian Wedding cake.
It's quite yummy too....and so triangular shaped,
and everyone specially designed with your own personal flags and candies.


This last photo takes on the threesies idea....like 3 mints in one....
of being, three views in one

Really, this is a great "threesies!"
The first view is looking through the window into a shop, while also taking the view of what's outside the shop (on the left) and finally your third view is the reflection of what's on this side of the glass when I shot the photo!

and so while we're on the topic of three---
We all know there are 3 sides to every story....but did you know there's such a thing as a 3-sided coin?

Thematic Photographic # 165 Welcome autumn

THIS IS A THEMATIC PHOTOGRAPHIC POST

.....one more look into autumn around where I live......

Things are a changing.......

On a side street in Saint Paul, in the Crocus Hill neighborhood....where the houses and mansions are large and distinctive and mostly built between 1890-1920....the leaves still change, and fall swiftly to the ground...waiting for their last duty of crackle and crunch.....

Such immense, rambling ivy slowly changing colors..leaf by leaf...each day another change.....How lucky they are to have this ivy....it's a delicate keeper, taking a healthy hold across this house....who needs curtains?

Sailing into autumn's wake....leaf by leaf.



I used to believe that autumn colors arrived only by the frosts that covered all the living.....and that was not exactly so....

My last TP post showed this spot two weeks ago after a gentle frost, and fog lingering throughout....today (our high was 86) it's beginning to turn....ever so slightly...and we haven't had a moment of frost......

Amazing isn't it?

but even better...

I made a wreath for our deck out of nature's free autumn art-supplies.....right from my own yard!

So, if you're feeling like adding your own autumn view.... put away your rakes, turn off the football game and post an autumn photo too!

Saturday Centus 8- October 2011 Friday night

THIS IS ESPECIALLY FOR  JENNY'S

and it's speaking about "Friday night football" as Jenny's theme prompt....allowing for this game, a goal of no more than 103 words, and throw out a photo if you care to cross the goal line happily!

I’m longing for butterfly touches, intoxicating passions, unlimited goals of surprising pleasures of back rubs, deep breaths, and gentle games…..


“And nobody carrying a leather ball over any yard line.


That’s a Friday night worth experiencing!”


“So if you’d rather watch your “Friday night football….” Go ahead, see if I stop you! While I dash out the door in my stunning and most steamy of all skimpy sun dresses and spend a few hours on a grassier playing field dancing my Friday night away, and possibly meet somebody new?

So gentlemen let this be a lesson to you....the proof is below..... (this was based on a true story)
....... from my ninth grade prom.  I had a red-haired boyfriend who hated dances and agreed that I could attend our 9th grade prom with a girl friend.  Sadly for him, but oh so happily for me, I met at this dance (Dreamy David) my soon to be first real true love.....Oh yes, he loved to dance, (my parents/grand-parents later loved him) and he had been watching me from afar, (we had a huge class of students) ....and we were quickly together forever....and ever...until I met my first red-haired imagine that husband....!  So much for childhood-sweethearts....I wonder if he's on Facebook....for another day....!

Sepia Saturday #95 Saturday: 8 October 2011

        S E P I A    S A T U R D A Y   POST


        WELCOME.....

                 Alan's theme photo for  Sepia Saturday, is a photograph by Henriette Crone - from the Royal Library of Denmark Collection:  showing Danish women marching for social justice....


So from women in Parliament to women working in mines, or as mimes ...I will follow a theme of women .....
in a few of their gathering rolls......

Some of their rolls were performed by actors playing various characters from life,  in public arenas....for enjoyment for all.....

I found this unique photo in a shoe box stuffed behind old books in an antique shop. Two of the performers in this unknown place, of nameless actors, stood out to me.  Can you guess which two?  The center all in important young woman appearing like she runs with Robin Hood, and the one on the right,  sporting much attitude with her arms folded... What is their story?  Auditioning, or already in their rolls?

More Power to the Women of the world......

This United States poster from the National Archives ran in the Minneapolis tribune....sparking quite a bit of fire you might say...in so many ways.

A very productive grouping of women were the various Ladies Groups, the Coffee Clubs of America United they Stand (or sit) Together....

Greeting from a coffee party in south Minneapolis, about 1935...they gathered to make their lives a better place for family and community...together..... Published in the Minneapolis Tribune

In the 40's women found themselves in unfamiliar places then what their normal roles were...

Women gathered at their last day of work for the Danube mine, Bovey, October 20, 1945....A normal day for them had been, "Taking care of children, a couple hours of sleep and get up and do their work."  Women pulled more and pushed more carts then many people today realize....... and really they look Happy!

...and yet, while these women labored right along side of men, they were subjected to much belittlement, not just by snide remarks caught briefly around the lunch room...but in publications such as this below....



Sister?  He's not my brother.  A man-sized job, what is that?  ...and as for meeting the test, honey many of us are designing the tests!

My featured word for "Y" is ...."yegg".......... a what?....you may ask?
When a "yegg" needs to keep his stolen goods hidden where would he take them?

What better place than out in the middle of no where to stash things....

Just as long as the neighbors don't come snooping around!

Because the yegg might be exposed to the wrong elements if they do

Like....these fellows...

They'd be happy to arrest all the Yeggs they could find...and take the captured yegg to....

Well, eventually all yeggs end up in jail or prison....even the amazing ones.....

It's really quite amazing what you can uncover by researching an uncommon word like "yegg"


Just read the following.......truth can be stranger and more exciting than fiction once you investigate.......

My Letter "Y" is for yegg, and the story of one amazing yegg, Johnny Ramensky, an unsung hero whose story needs to be told.


A “yegg” is a thief, especially known as a burglar or safe cracker. It’s slang, and insulting by nature and yegg’s origin is unknown. I’d venture to guess that there was a famous thief named Yegg, that was captured and the name used from then on in connection with other thieves.


Speaking of famous thieves……

Scotland had a most famous of safe-crackers named; “Gentle or Gentleman Johnny” commonly called John Ramensky (born as Jonas Ramanauskas) on April 6, 1906 at Glenboig, in Lanarkshire. Sources say his drifting into crime prepared his lifestyle as a safe breaker who was also an excellent expert with explosives. Apparently, his expertise brought much attention from the army during the Second World War and he enlisted with the Royal Fusiliers in January of 1943, being employed with the Commandos with special duties, and became an instructor in safe-blowing. They even parachuted him behind enemy lines to break open safes to steal military documents. The link below involves a deeper look into Ramensky if you’re interested.


Johnny's story is amazing...


This yegg, took the name “Gentle Johnny” because he wasn’t a violent man ever, but sadly, after the war he slipped back to his former life of gambling and safe-blowing and spent many long periods of being incarcerated in prison.



Eventually, in 1972 this yegg, Ramensky while serving a one year sentence (after being caught on a shop roof ) died following a stroke in Perth Royal Infirmary in Perth Prison.



So what do you think about this yegg, “gentleman- John Ramensky” as the video link below says, “desperate times called for desperate measures."  Did Ramensky prove to be more of a good yegg than bad?

Thematic Photographic # 165 Welcome Autumn

THIS IS A THEMATIC PHOTOGRAPHIC POST....and today we

                    "WELCOME AUTUMN"

          Thank you Carmi, from Written Inc. blog....... for a delightfully colorful burst of photos... to grace our screens all week......

          I will try to reveal autumn .....we are still enjoying a late summer's end.....with highs near the 80's all week again....I could get so used to this........

....a gentle reminder of autumn's descent ....


My favorite summer buddy.....we spend so many summer hours together.....just the two of us.......!!!!!!!!

This summer's adventures are just about over......with these fallen leaves paving the way....dear buddy we shall part until late spring of next year.....

You know it's time to "Welcome autumn" when you wake up one morning and "Fog, has arrived and spots of early morning frost welcome autumn's awaited approach....with mixed feelings for me....shot two weeks ago now....

A festive autumn tradition lies....below...

A wine tasting at nearby Cannon River Winery where tastings are a simple pleasure ...and most delicious since Minnesota grapes survive the toughest of winters in jolly good spirits..... (photo taken last Friday)

The weeds of summer have weaved a perfect autumn garland throughout our evergreen tree. (photo taken last week)

....surprisingly...and luckily....this photo below is exactly where we are in relation to Welcome autumn......

Just a gentle reminder that summer is fast fading away....this photo taken today...but as I was snapping it, another reminder of what is coming was the crackling of other leaves behind me trickling down another tree....

Welcome again to Jenny's "Saturday Centus" from her blog, "off on my tangent" and one of my favorite games to play.....it's back to 100 words plus 10 for the prompt, in any style writing and we can include a photo!  Hooray!  Our prompt for today is,
"The number you have reached is no longer in service...."


Here is my offering today:

The recording blurted, “The number you have reached is no longer in service."   Rounds had been exhausting yesterday, so why did I share coffee with a stranger and go against hospital policy? Why take his number? Perhaps there were answers in the coffee shop.


“Melanie do you remember serving me coffee yesterday?”

“Yeah, why do you ask?”

“Did you notice the man I was sitting with?  Maybe you knew him?”

“Man? You weren’t sitting with any man.”

“Yes I was. He wore a brown suit and you happened to knock his hat onto the floor. Don’t you remember?”

“No, you were alone and I never saw a hat.”

The letter to Miss Barrows, from 10 year old Pat Fletcher, Lexington, Va. is astonishing to read....perhaps he had a great proof reader....quite a writer this child-writer should have become!

Last but by no means least....I mean who doesn't enjoy a healthy eat?  This is not what you'd expect to see these days illustrated in very many magazines, especially not a child's.

Alphabe-Thursday - The letter X

THIS IS AN   ALPHABE-THURSDAY POST

The Infamous XYZ Affair of 1797 involved coded words......

My Letter X for Jenny’s Alphabe-Thursdays is... The XYZ Affair, its code name is
    XYZ Nomenclator (nomenclators were used by royal houses throughout Europe to conceal diplomatic and personal dispatches and messages)   I'll define its meaning with a student's quest.......




      There once was a girl named, Xabiere Xalbadora who was born in Xenia, Illinois long ago. Xabiere was very concerned that her name was not very popular (beginning in X) and that her classmates felt she was inferior to them. She was determined to prove that there were plenty of exciting and important things that began with the letter X.  Her searching ended with discovery of the legendary  XYZ Affair of 1797.

     The  XYZ Affair  involved secret demands from French officials for monetary commitments from the United States. U.S. delegates in France, sent details of such discussions to Timothy Pickering, the Secretary of State. They were encoded with a number-letter nomenclator that included the following coded words and fragments:

This is the first of the coded words and fragments....

The U.S. commissioners were outraged by these proposals of what they determined was "bribery" and sent the following encoded answer:

                                 449.449.457.1193.1178.27.493.
                          
This decoded message spelled out one of America's most famous replies in all of American history......
decoded it stated:  no no not a sixpence  (they refused to be bribed)

Oh such sweet joys from making and breaking secret codes and messages....
